The Mystery of Union Lodge
Very little is known about Union Lodge. The first historical mention of this lodge was in a letter written to the Brethren of Union Lodge by Alexander Martin, Governor of North Carolina, dated 1784. It is assumed to have been legitimately chartered or warranted by a credible authority - either a European Grand Lodge, one of several Provincial Grand Lodges then operating in the Colonies, or one of the Colonial or newly-formed state Grand Lodges c. 1784 or prior, but no known evidence exists to identify its parentage.
In the few documents where Union Lodge is referenced, it is not given a Lodge number. This is curious, as Lodges established in the Colonies by European Grand Lodges during the 1730s-1760s were normally assigned numbers from those Grand Lodges.
To date, the origin of Union Lodge remains a mystery, and much more research remains to be done.
